Strict CO2 Reduction Targets For New HGVs By 2030

Strict CO2 Reduction Targets For New HGVs By 2030

There’s an apt quote from the American inventor Charles Kettering that we can use to kick off this blog. ‘My interest is in the future because I am going to spend the rest of my life there’.

It’s an idea that’s true for every one of us in every area of our lives. That’s why, where possible, it’s helpful to know what the future holds so preparations can be made to accommodate change and embrace opportunities.

A Decade To Comply

It’s not unusual for lawmakers to look way into the future and set legislative targets that we will need to meet. Indeed, it’s essential that this far-sighted approach is used to help all affected plan for how they’ll comply with the new circumstances.

One key future consideration for the transport sector is the EU’s clean mobility strategy. This has the target of reducing CO2 emissions by at least 40% of 1990 levels by 2030.

EU commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete said: “The new targets and incentives will help tackle emissions, as well as bring fuel savings to transport operators and cleaner air for all Europeans. He added: “For EU industry, this is an opportunity to embrace innovation towards zero-emission mobility and further strengthen its global leadership in clean vehicles.”

Central to the legislation is the need to develop new vehicle technologies and an expanded infrastructure that facilitate reductions in CO2 emissions by 2030.

Challenging Targets

While companies like Truckcraft Bodies are leading the way in the reduction of CO2 emissions with their range of fuel-efficient delivery vehicles, much more can be done. As ACEA secretary general Erik Jonnaert, said:

‘We can now only call upon member states to urgently step up their efforts to roll out the infrastructure required for charging and refuelling the alternatively-powered trucks which will need to be sold en masse if these targets are to be met.”

It’s clear that the EU transport infrastructure requires radical overhaul with significantly better access to electric charging points and availability of zero-emission fuels like hydrogen and CNG/LNG.

Fit For The Future

While the proposals are yet to be formally ratified the direction of travel is clear. The onus will be on the transport builders sector to embrace the opportunities that zero emission laws demand and step up to the plate.

At Truckcraft Bodies we’re proud to be a future-facing business. We understand the impacts CO2 emissions are having on our planet and are doing our ‘bit’ to make a difference. Our recent work with TRAILAR is a clear indication of our commitment in this area.

We’ll continue to invest in our research and development working with our partners to build truly zero-emission trucks that meet the needs of our clients and exceed the new targets.

That way we’ll be making our contribution to a future that’s cleaner and safer and helps us all to enjoy healthier lives.
